Man the Stealer's really put the fear of HD in you all.
They can't void your warranty for using other than HD oils.
In fact, the dealer cannot even void your warranty, the manufacturer has to do that.
I use Mobile 1 In engine and trans, looking for a good primary lube, as I have heard clutches don't like super slick sythetics. And to be honest short of paint falling off or the security system going nuts my bike will never see the dealer.
I allready tore into the engine, so drivetrain warranty is gonna be a doubtfull as it is.
But you know what? Just because they threaten you, use scare tactics, and try to hold you hostage for anything you want to do to your scoot, you should really question if you should use your dealer for anything.
I've been in the automotive world for 20 years, ASE Master Engine Machinst/Master Tech.
I've Worked for auto dealers (Ford, Nissan) and owned my own machine shop for 6 yrs. I finally had it with being filthy and abusing my body, so now I pimp chrome.
In the real non-Harley world warranty is a normal function of service, as long as abuse, neglect or plain old TOO MUCH HP didn't cause the failure any automotive dealer is happy to have your warranty work.
You see the manufacturer pays them to provide this service as well they get to charge the manufacturer for the parts they purchase to do the job.
If the motorcycle industry is much different I'd be supprised.
I am sick to death of hearing how afraid everyone is of they're harley dealer and them holding warranties over customer heads.
This in the long run is going to be a huge backlash against dealers and HD in general I think.
I actually had my dealer try to tell me that if I didn't buy their SERVICE plan, pre-paid services for 4 years, that I would void my warranty. I asked him very plainly to tell me that again, and he stumbled and hemmed. If you had any idea how illegal it is to do that sort of thing you'd be pissed for even buying a HD.
The long and the short of it is.... if you wanna modify your scoot be prepared to pay out of pocket for anything that fails as a result.
Thats only fair, I mean I wouldn't ask Harley to replace a transmission in my bike after I blew it up with a 100hp 100ft lb engine. By the same token if my blinkers just fell off one day, I'd expect Harley to make it good.
Most likely they won't, and just because of this attitude they have I spend NOTHING at my harley dealer! I refuse to buy oil, chrome trinkets, or any wear items there.
Sorry, I just hear this day in and day out, and I needed to vent. I'll put the soap box away now.
P.S. Silver I Like you, and usually like what you say. But, sometimes I think maybe you're not as objective as you could be because of where you work. My .02
