11 weeks agoDave, I bought me a tour pack online and I am going to try and paint it to match my bike. My bike has velocity red sunglow paint. Is Harley the only place to get this paint shade or can I get it from somewhere else. Someone told me to take the side cover off and take it to the automotive paint supply place and that they may be able to scan it and match me up with what I need. I would really like to paint it one stage urethane, but I am pretty sure I am going to have to use a silver basecoat and then put the red over the silver to get the right look. I have been online looking a lot and have not really found anyone else who has that shade of paint, so I am pretty sure it is a custom Harley code. It does not have to be exact, just would like it to be fairly close, will not use it except while traveling to and from events, not while there or at home. It will be on detachable mounts, already have the mounting hardware on bike. I guess I will be able to paint the silver and then the candy or velocity or whatever I come up with over top of that.

11 weeks agoAnyone that sells PPG should be able to get it. Or take the side cover as you said. I don`t think you have to silver base coat it first but I would use a gray primer to get it close. Unless it is a candy type color the actual silver shouldn`t be needed. It might match better, but your paint shop should be able to print the instructions for you. It should tell you prep info.
Good luck with it. Try not to breath it. Bad schit. Use a respirator.
11 weeks agoI`d just paint it black - It`ll blend in just fine.
11 weeks agoLOL
11 weeks agoThe tour pack is already Vivid black Mcg. Hell the paint supplier here wanted $202 for the paint for that tourpack. I told the guy I just wanted to paint a small part not 3 or 4 bikes. I took the side cover in and he took a picture or scanned it and he came up with the match a tri-color Velocity red sunglow. I may just order some paint from tcp , a silver basecoat and a candy red top coat , both are already mixed ready to spray, will cost me about $55 and then maybe another $35 for the clearcoat.
11 weeks agoDave, here is a couple of colors that I have picked out, to paint the tourpack, it is not exact match , but it should be close enough for a detachable part that will not be on there much.
11 weeks agoThe silver being the basecoat and the candy red top or mid coat. Bothe these come ready to spray urethane, and they are compatible with each other.
11 weeks agoVT, as you now know, paint ain`t cheap. Some of the supply places can make it up in an aerosol application which simplifies the job. Not sure how you are fixed for HVLP paint guns, so it is a viable option.
You are right, for no more than you might have it mounted, close enough might be close enough. Candy is a funny thing. The thicker/more coats, the darker it gets. That may give you enough flexibility to get it pretty close.
11 weeks agoI think most people wont notice, or more importantly not talk crap about the paint matching..
10 weeks agoDave, I already knew that about the candy color being darker the more coats you do, I think after I spray the silver, I will probably be able to get real close the the velocity red shade by adding a real thin layer at a time. I will use one of the side covers as a gauge for that. And yes I already have an HVLP spray gun. And I also have a friend with a spray booth, and he may just spray it for me. He just painted a service truck for another friend of mine who used to paint for a living and he did a pretty nice job. He is trying to learn how to spray different paints and be able to spray better, so this practice will be good for him. He does the Line-X spray in bed liners and does boats and other things as well. He is located in the old paint shop at what used to be the Ford Dealership about 5 miles from my house. And Artie, you are right even if people notice a little difference they will probably not say anything about it. It is after all my bike, and if I am good with it then it should be fine with them... and if they do not like it then
10 weeks agoMost guys don`t pack the hardware to **** talk another guys bike.
That would be a sweet set-up. Having a actual paint booth would be awesome. yep, thin coats will be good. Sounds like you have it covered either way. Can`t wait to see how it comes out.
10 weeks agoDave, if I am walking I am packing . LOL! besides even if I leave it black, it is my bike and I might like black and red together. I have seen some color combos on bikes that I thought looked hideous, but I kept my thoughts to myself. The thing about colors what is appealing to one person my be repulsive to another , that is why there are so many colors and shades of colors, something to please anybody and everybody.
