July 6, 2006Well, sometimes a bit of history and wisdom from some old mechanics (not me, I'm just old) helps.
On the oil level, the evos used 44 oz., I'm told, the 32 was originally used in the TC88s and later reduced in some to combat leak problems. Seems better gaskets or stronger cases have cured that so the 1Qt. solution seems right to me. My clutch is not dragging and the shifting is, if anything, a bit smoother now and neutral is easy to hit (as it always was on this one). More oil is better, IMO, unless it is being foamed or leaking somewhere or causing the clutch to drag. I suspect the acceptable (not ideal) condition is anything between 26 oz and the point where it makes the clutch drag or leaks spring in the gaskets.
Incidentally, 26 is the recommended for Dynas also but many just use the qt. and have no problems.(my wideglide, not my roadglide)
I, admittedly have no experience with softails but think the rationale may be the same. Anyway, whatever makes ya comfy.
