February 20, 2006Why didn't HD just go with wheel tensioners like the jap bikes have been doing for years? I guess it can be attributed to the "not invented here" mentality.

February 25, 2006How much noise does the gear drive style make? I don't mind a little whine but I don't want something that is very noticeable and distracting.
February 26, 2006I just went with S&S 510 gear drive cams after 20,000 miles. Noise is minimal, performance is great. My tensioner shoes showed hardly no wear at all but a small amount of pitting. I agree with all of the posts that mention the fact that the material is somewhere in the motor and oil filter dosen't catch it all. Sacrifice a little chrome up-grade and use the money for gear drive cams. I went with S&S because they tend to be quieter than other gear drives you can use. My bike is an 03 Road King Classic, stage one, with Rinehart true duals.
February 28, 2006I'm always checkin' out the forum but never really post anything but MAN I just have to jump in on this one ! I'am always hangin' out at my wrenches shop her in town & if you have seen what I have seen I would go to gear drive the minute I would buy a bike !! The last one he replaced was on a 03 ultra classic & it was wore down to the metal on the tensioners !! I wish I had a digital camera to show ya. This bike only had about 15,000 on it. I just had mine done with the S&S set up & mine didn't look to hot " 20,000 mil. " RdKing. I almost put it off but after what I have seen from the other bikes that he has done I just had to do it. So my fellow riders I would really think about doing this upgrade cause it's a whole lot cheaper then redoing your motor !!
March 21, 2006I've seen a number of cases , I just switched to gear drive Andrews cams and am much happier
March 21, 2006I'm curious about this. I'm at about 15500 miles on my 02 Night Train. I'm wondering if I should be concerned. If there is a real cause for concern, how do I go about inspecting for wear? Is it just a simple peek inside? More involved than that?
March 21, 200603 Road King - 23k Miles, noise from lower engine (gravel) pulled cam plate, low and behold - broken cam shoe. Split on the far edge, about 30 minutes from catastrophic failure. Switching to 203 w/gear drive - beware!
March 21, 2006I dont think you can get the 203s in gear drive.
NT just pull the cam cover off and check them out.
