wax. no wax. wax. no wax.
wtf, wax the phreaking thing! Gets rid of any water spots from the last wash. You are going to wash it, aren't you?
Undesirable crap is going to collect on the bike while in suspended animation. You WILL rinse the bike down once you take it out of mothballs, won't you? Do you want to rinse abrasive material directly off the unprotected paint or would you rather rinse it off a coat of wax?
fill the tank, put stabil in it, fresh oil and filter, wash and wax, move the bike every three weeks to prevent flat spots, battery tender, and leave it alone until spring. Don't get helpful and start it. You're NOT helping it.
Oh, and while it's in storage, you could lube the cables, adjust your clutch cable free play, check fastener torque, detail your laced wheels if you have them, detail your frame (mirror on floor), dress any leather, use plastic polish on signal and tail lenses, change your transmission fluid, change your primary fluid, remember the wonderful rides and great times you had over the summer, shop for cheaper insurance, plan great rides you want to take next summer, ask around for better disc brake pads 'cause the HD ones suck, ensure your battery terminals are clean, clean out all the crap that collects under the saddle, sign up for an ERC with the MSF, drink a beer while looking at your bike, and whatever else your imagination can come up with.
