May 11, 2009I know this has nothing to due with a Harley but I just recently had someone taking a 1980 *or* 81 (don''t have title yet to confirm) Suzuki GN400X to the dump so I took it home. It has been sitting in his workshop for over 7 years and he wanted it out. The bike has rust on it that is not to bad. Does anyone know a good way to clean surface rust off of chrome? Maybe some other suggestions to clean up an old bike? Thank you in advance.

May 12, 2009Yep, navel jelly on chrome, a little rubbing compound on paint.
It should look decent.

Cheeeez.......we have been down this road before. The BEST solution for (surface rust) on chrome is STEEL WOOL........either 0000 *or* 000 will do the trick very nicely. It will (not) scratch the chrome nor show any signs.....but the rust goes away like magic. Why deal with anything else.
This trick does NOT apply to other surfaces that may show scratches.
May 12, 2009thank you for all the input. I will try the steel wool first.

May 14, 2009I would try the steel wool on yer pecker first....if that don''t bother you....then it won''t matter if yer chrome is scratched.....

try to remember that steel wool comes "graded"......you can get packets of it from coarse to very fine. 0000 is super fine (smoothes lacquer, varnish) 000 is extra fine (smoothing & polishing), 00 is very fine (for polishing bright metals).........There ya go...
They recommend 00 for polishing bright metals and 000 and 0000 are even "finer" grades..... which will NOT scratch chrome.
