July 16, 2009Next story from my northern trip. The roads were bad - I had a fully load T-Bag on the tour-pak rack, and my wife leaning back into the back-rest real hard every time we hit a pot-hole or raised lip in the road that about sent her over my shoulders. Anyway, the clamps/latches holding the lid in place had developed weak springs. So the clamps slid back, the lid raised, the lid slid back, the tour-pak cracked by the forward hinge, and thank the good H-D engineers for the lock that kept the lid from separating from the bike. Made it throught the trip. Now the hinge and the surrounding area has a nice thick layer of fiberglass. I bought and installed new latches (at $10.99 per), and added a lock latch under the backrest. Can't tell the pak was cracked unless you know it's there. So, the moral of the story is - put new latches on if you think vibration or anything else might let the lid come loose. I showed Moscooter how the springs in his brand new bike latches only half work and he started hollering and dancing about "Don't Do That!".
