August 18, 2015Yeah, I know, but I like to have a plan I guess. Too many years in the military! LOL

August 19, 2015Dave, you need to be spontaneous sometime, makes life much more enjoyable and exciting. And I agree with what you said about keeping a good eye on the tire. A blowout at 80 or 90 mph at my age would have been a crippler for sure if not a life ender. I certainly do not want to spend what time I have left on this earth in a wheel chair, in a coma or on a machine that helps keep me alive. I even wore my DOT approved helmet on the trip this year, and left the beanie helmet at home, I figured if I had some crashing problems that I would have the old head properly protected. Anyway, Freewilly I am glad you were able to make it out for a couple of days, wish you had called so we could have met. I keep hoping to meet you guys one of these days, before I get to old to ride any longer.
August 19, 2015Sometimes we can just jet off and play but with dogs and schitt it makes it hard to just up and go. We`ll make it one year.
The bigger bike is a lot harder on the tires, especially the rear. Wrecking at any age sucks, but the older I get the longer it takes to heal up. Nothing wrong with a good helmet. I have 2 or 3 full and 3/4 face lids but I never wear them like I probably should.
August 19, 2015One of the problems with going off half cocked is not being completely prepared. I took the Ultra (it ran great EOD) and only realized when I got to Sturgis that both tires were down to the wear bar. Made it a little worrisome in the rain and hail coming back.I carry a half helmet that fits in the saddlebags and was glad I had it, but only had tinted glasses and couldn`t see schitt in the rain.
August 19, 2015Oh that sucks. It seems like We`ve had a rain/storm every year I`ve gone. So you rode back on the tires? I guess its only about 600is miles. I`m glad the bike still runs well. Is that the longest trip you`ve taken? Can you tell that it is stronger?
August 20, 2015Longest trip this year, no doubt it`s stronger. Finally got Linda on the back and ran up Belt hill, topped it at 80 no problem. Before I was grabbing 4th and getting passed by everyone.
Will get new tires this winter, riding the Road King for the rest of they ear. Thinking about switching to something other than Dunlops since both tires are shot.
August 21, 2015FW - I went to Michelins and got good wear. However, I believe the Dunlops wore just as well.
Dave - VT and I plan to live a few more years so keep puttin` coins in the piggy bank and when it`s full come see us. I will be good to meet up with you again. We can once more laugh at the pink towel.
August 21, 2015FreeWilly, I really glad to hear that you`re getting that kind of results from your bike. It`s too bad we don`t have before and after dyno sheets but the real test are things like Belt Hill while two up. I`m tickled that it`s doing that well.
I really like the Avon tires. I`ve been running them on 3 of our bikes and an getting around 10,000 miles on the rears and the fronts are way longer than that. And the grip is great!
McG, we are doing as well as we can to try for Sturgis next year. It would be nice to visit with y`all. You never know. The towel can be a different color next time! LOL
August 24, 2015I do not know when I will go to Sturgis again or if. It is an expensive trip to make out there. The lodging there is astronomical, and it is a pretty expensive price tag on the gas for the out and back trip. Right now I do not plan to go out there again for the rally but that may change, I hate crowded roads and stop and go driving while riding my air cooled bike. If that is what the future trip to that rally is, then it is over for me. I saw Myrtle Beach rally in years past grow so big that the roads could not handle all the traffic without all the lines and stop and go riding. Getting around easily and having lots of places to ride and see are high on my list, so the rally attraction is wearing thin for my liking.
so my future biking experiences may be riding the back roads of America, seeing sights I have never seen before.
August 25, 2015I can do without the crowds as well. It costs too much to go every year to. The money we didn`t spend will go towards or NASCAR trip to Phoenix in November. It should be a good time.
August 25, 2015I stayed at the Days End Campground, it was $100 for the whole week for a tent. You could not buy just a night. I bought 6 t shirts for $80 ,two pins for about $10 and spent $100 on food and beer. Beer was $2.00 at the campground.Gas went on the card so I`m not sure what that was. Never went on the Chip/Glencoe side of town so avoided the crowds.
August 26, 2015FW, you got off light, all I will say is I spent several thousand dollars on this trip, somewhere between 5 and 10K. not sure exactly. And after all of that I guess all I can say is I GOT ER DONE!!!!!!! I have been to the point that a rally is a rally is a rally for a long time, it has all gotten too commercialized and is all about the money. They have just taken all of the riding and exploring and fun of meeting and sharing with other people out of it.
